How To Repair Hairline Cracks In External Walls

  1. 'Lo all.

Will probable exist painting the exterior of a house at some betoken. If I tin can calm my nerve - information technology'south 3 stories although only a semi.

Anyhoo, it'southward around 12 years old with the original paint finish which is looking very tired. Information technology also has a few longish fine cracks from full general settlement - they tend to come from window corners etc.

Soooo, What's the all-time/easiest filler to utilise? Hoping to not have to rake out the cracks are they are hairlineish - just wanna fill, ideally from a cartridge I estimate, and paint soon subsequently.

Likewise, thoughts on the best make of ext paint, delight?

    Ta very muchly.

  2. Not that particular pigment but have bought paint off them as they are only about 8 miles ftom my house. :D :D

Given that its a Bedec pigment information technology should be good.

  3. Something like Tou pret with a splash of the masonry pigment added to it and worked into the cracks with a brush. Could wink it over later filling with a damp sponge to remove backlog filler.
  4. Old credit card make a bully tool for working filler into fine cracks.
  5. If the cracks are really 'hairline', it's difficult getting any filler in them to make a repair. Take it's a rendered terminate ?

The problem I had final year when I painted my house and repaired cracks is you end up spreading filler either side of the crack. When you scrape the excess filler off, yous finer spread filler over the rendered surface and end up with a unlike texture finish to the original render. This screams out when it's painted and what starts off as an annoying hairline crevice, ends up as noticeable patch of utter badgerer

The really fine cracks I just dabbed loads of paint into using an onetime brush, wiped off whatsoever excess and repeated a few times, before painting over the whole wall

Larger cracks filled with Toupret exterior, removed excess filler so textured filler with an old dry brush to match return finish
Whatever filler either side of crack or smeared over the return I removed with a damp castor

Hard to get them to completely disappear and some will open up up again just, generally worth the extra time taken I recon

  6. Spot on, Dave.

The in laws had their hoosie painted last ear and the guy used a 'resin' filler from a cartridge I believe. It'south equally you say, quite visible with the raised runway either side of where the fissure was.

Yes, this other house is too rendered with a 'shine' finish - ie slightly 'sandy' textured. And then, yes, any surrounding filler volition mess that up.

I'll accept a close wait to run into what size these cracks are, and take the solution from there. If I become Berec paint, then I may well but try forcing pigment in to the cleft and and then painting over - information technology's meant to be super-flexible.

    Cheers.

  7. I endeavor to avert whatsoever types of filler that require mixing with water because even when overcoated with the all-time possible outside masonry paints water ingress will eventually find its fashion to the filler and starting time making information technology grow in size as it degrades, eventually giving you the tale tale raised filler lines pushing the pigment covering away from the substrate.
If the hairline cracks are very fine but remove as much one-time filler equally possible and coat with ii slightly watered down coats of paint with a minor long haired rad roller, then over coat as per your paint awarding recommendations.
If filler is necessary try to keep information technology to the absolute minimum possible because its ever sometime filled parts of your external walls that will breakdown commencement.
i have found 2 part polyester blazon filler or similar that car body shops apply is good and non over expensive compared to branded types
mixed in small amounts on a plastic based tray, and using erstwhile maxed out credit cards to apply the filler always make me chuckle, whatsoever left over 2 role filler is easily removed from plastic when fully cured by flexing the plastic.
the 2 part filler when cured is not the easiest to sand downward and so utilize slowly when sanding use 80 grit sandpaper in round motions.
